lyrics

In the fall I saw a ribbon in the grass
A stone wall and a root sprouting upward through the cracks
An empty pack of cigarettes buried in the sand
A pickup truck bed like a weathered old man
A tree all gnarled and jagged branches aching to the sky
Humble though it had defeated time

In the fall I wrote a poem
The pages were bare, so bare
Words I put there
And it became warm
And I breathed the air
Up walked a girl with long golden hair

"So,” she said, "The future ends, look backward to the past."
And I said "It's all right, we've done this all before my lass."
